Keep It Simple Stupid

Oh MY GOODNESS!! I have had quite the evening. Tonight I attended my favorite meeting in town, the one that got me sober. I raised my hand at one of the first meetings and volunteered to be the coffee maker and that saved my ass. Its great if you go to meetings on a regular basis, but if you don't get INVOLVED in the program chances are that you will probably not make it. I suppose that is my opinion and like Syd mentioned in his post today, take what you want out of what you read here and leave the rest. But I have seen it with my very own eyes, the people who get involved-chairing, treasurer, GSR, greeter, coffee-WHATEVER-generally do well when combined with working the oh so important steps.
So anyway, the actual meeting went well and then there was a business meeting afterward. This meeting was to discuss a picnic that we are planning at the Beach House where we hold our meeting. A picnic. Pretty simple right? Well get a room full of alcoholics and addicts planning it and the next thing you know you would think we were planning something like Woodstock for chrissake. They were all cross talking, shouting, arguing and getting nothing accomplished. I took my buddy in recovery (the one who wants me but will never have me hehe) aside and said "Let's make a run for it-- we're so outta here" lol. And we left. And it felt good. When and if they have Woodstock I will make a potato salad, open the building for them and that's it. End of discussion for me! Way to complicate a hot dog meeting folks. I could not get outta there fast enough. I like to get involved like I said above BUT when everyone is getting all worked up for nothing I just choose to let them all try to figger that shit out on their own. YOU try telling 20 or so drunks that they are wrong, or that they should just keep it simple. It can get ugly and I have had enough ugly for a lifetime THANK YOU VERY MUCH. It was amusing sitting in the back and watching them for like a minute and then I did what I had to do and now I am home chuckling about it. I'll be sure to let y'all know how it turns out. hehe.
My son is doing OK, but his Doctor wants to run some tests. J is NOT A HAPPY CAMPER about this. He has NEVER had blood drawn and has informed me that he WILL NOT be letting anyone draw blood. Nope, not happenin. OY. If anyone has any advice on how to get a kid to submit to a blood test, please share. He's too damn big to hold him down, and I know my kid-he WILL fight it. He really needs the blood work and I need a solution. I will pray on it, and I will get an answer. He also needs a MRI (which I THINK is a brain scan). That is painless but could be scary for him. I don't know. But he is getting tremors (he calls them mini seizures) and it needs to be checked. He also gets the "shakes" as he calls them and that is what the blood work is for. So any advise from my fellow bloggers would be greatly appreciated. Between God and you all, I'm sure I will find a solution.

Gratitude list Du jour:

  • That you stopped by to read my ramblings, for that I am grateful....

  • for my 1244th day of abstinence from mind altering substances....

  • to have a few really great friends in recovery....

  • that I have the next TWO days off from work....

  • that I know madness when I see it and know when it's time to scoot the hell outta there....

  • I am grateful that I got a new boss at work and he's a pretty cool dude....

  • for my not so little guy, J-He's a handful but I wouldn't trade being a mom for anything....

  • a great job, and supervisors who know I give them my best when I'm there....

  • family....

  • a car that is all MINE sitting in the driveway....

I could go on all night but that will do for now

Have a good night you buncha alkies, addicts and al-anoners. And please remember to K.I.S.S.!

Queen....OUT

Too funny chickie! I leave it be with the AA 'functions' too. I think they should have been lawyers, they love to argue.

As to your kid, I just acted like its not a big deal. When they talked about it, I would just say, Ya, it sucks, but a lot of things do and docs are going to be doing it all your life, its not a big deal, it only takes a minute and its not comfortable. But its going to happen so just relax it won't kill you. Even though I was worried and anxious as heck, with the appearance of calm, I was teaching them how to do it... stay as calm as possible and just do it. Oh. Sorry so long...

You make me laugh. I can imagine that scene with everyone's ego up in the air over a simple picnic. I agree with you--I'm the first to the door when the serenity breakers start to run the show. My sponsor thinks that I need to stick around. I say Why? I don't want what they have and they obviously don't want what I have. So I'm leaving.

With the blood draw--is he afraid of needles? Maybe the nurse vampires have some good ideas. I can remember forcing myself to look at the needle going in and drawing blood. It was my way of toughing things out. Now I don't mind them at all.

I am with you! I just leave when everyone starts arguing. I don't mind a good fight, but I have to pick and choose the ones I want to be in.
I am sorry but I can't offer you any help one the blood thing. I hate getting my blood drawn.

My son was a fighter and screamer with blood tests. It was sooo embarrassing when he was 16 years old..LOL..no, really we would hold him down. Took about 3 people. But you can't sedate him, that takes a needle too!

The MRI is about an hour long, and he needs to hold perfectly still. They probably will mildly sedate him for that.

No help here on the blood draw. The first time for Annie ( that she was aware of what was happening), she was about 8. Holy shit!! It took 5 people to hold her skinny little ass down! She was screaming,"Mommy, why are you letting them do this to me?" Oh yeah, THAT was a fun day! I strongly suggest Zanax! I know, I know... but it got Annie through some seriously scary stuff a few times. I'm not an advocate of drugging your kids, but I think it was worth it. It was so much better than the fear and the trauma. The fear is bigger than the event for them until they go through it. Just sayin' jeNN

No idea on how to get his blood drawn other than distracting him while it's being done or promising him something he wants. Some times bribery is a necessity with kids.

The MRI is definitely a brain scan. If he has any issues with claustrophobia that might be an issue. I had 4 in one year and to say I wasn't a happy camper is putting it mildly.

I did alot of room work the first year myself. Coffee maker, clearing the room up for the dance troupe that followed the meeting, to having the keys handed to me 2 months in (that was an honor but weird they trusted someone with so little time under their belt).

Hope things go well with the blood test and MRI. (Hugs)Indigo

OMG. A bunch of alkies planning anything is hillarious. For your son, tell him that drawing blood is a shot in reverse - TELL the nurses without him there not to dig for a vein. The MRI - sedation helps but an OPEN MRI is easy, but you still have to be still. Best of luck.
One of the biggest floor fights I have ever been involved in was whether to serve green peas or green beans. HELL, DO BOTH. Some people just look for a resentment.
